Written by Aronofsky, the film is known to focus on a couple (Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem) whose quaint existence is interrupted by the arrival of several uninvited guests. The official synopsis for mother! keeps things short and sweet rather than diving head first into a bevy of juicy plot details that most of us would like kept hidden until we actually witness the film for ourselves next month.
This isn't Aronofsky's first foray into horror, and he certainly knows how to unnerve an audience. After the biblical epic Noah, Aronofsky returns to the genre he has created and forgot to name. Additionally, mother! is landing right in the heart of awards season, so I'm curious if Paramount is hoping they can make the same kind of run that Fox Searchlight did on Black Swan. But the film's two-minute trailer (and poster) promises dark and delicious suspense more akin to "Black Swan", Aronofsky's Best Picture-nominated ballerina thriller, which nabbed Natalie Portman the Oscar for best actress. If mother! can live up to even a tenth of those films, we may very well have the most unsettling film of the year on our hands.
