National Night Out events happening Tuesday

National Night Out started with the thought of bringing communities together.

National Night Out is an annual community event created to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit, and expand police-community partnerships.

The event will be from 5 to 8 p.m. tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Admiral Kidd Park (2125 Santa Fe Ave.).

The fourth annual tri-church National Night Out event - sponsored by St. Joseph Catholic, St. John Lutheran and New Life Christian Fellowship churches - will be held in conjunction with the kickoff event. Free hot dogs and ice cream are on the menu, and family-oriented activities. In most communities, they were mostly "lights on" vigils with some basic information given to the community.

The city has offered National Night Out for more than 20 years. There will be free food, live music, a rock wall and a police K-9 unit, according to the event's Facebook page.

Falls Church: 6-8 p.m. August 1 at Jefferson Village Park, Falls Church.

Helena's National Night Out event will take place today at Wal Mart Marketplace. All will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Observances range from block parties and festival to cookouts and vigils with activities such as safety demonstrations, seminars, and speakers.

Last year, White said the Police Department expected 400 people to come to National Night Out in Findlay, but got almost twice that number. "So there is a neighborhood network or night out at every location throughout town or several locations, that residents have a wide variety to pick from". Cities host community events that allow neighbors to interact with law enforcement.

Kennet Square - 200 Block of East Linden Street in Kennet Square - 5 to 7 p.m.

Police these days say they're under a microscope which makes gaining and keeping the community's trust that much more important. They will present their plan to the public Tuesday afternoon.
