Cleveland's All-Star point guard has asked the Cavaliers to trade him, two people familiar with the situation told the Associated Press on Friday.
It's more likely that Irving simply doesn't want to wait for the Cavaliers to start from the bottom again- he led the team before James arrived, but with a bad team around him that never won more than 33 games in a season. The only issue is that the Wolves aren't allowed to trade him until December 15 because he signed with them as a free agent, according to National Basketball Association policy.
If Irving would rather make more money from shoes and endorsements and television commercials, would get more satisfaction from those than chasing another championship ring, then I'm ready to let the best isolation player in the league go if the deal is right. While other contenders got better by landing some marquee players, the Cavs missed out on their key trade targets (Paul George, Jimmy Butler) and have been unable to make their team appreciably better. From his statements upon LeBron James' departure to the Miami Heat to the firing of general manager David Griffin and the lowball offer to general manager candidate Chauncey Billups, Gilbert has proven his incompetence.
Why the Cavs should do the deal: Fox is a young point guard who has tons of potential.
Over the previous few months, the Cavs had been anxious about Irving's mindset. They'd love to make the playoffs this upcoming season, and adding Kyrie Irving would certainly do the job. Either Irving gets traded, or James leaves after next season as a free agent. The report says that the Knicks prefer to send Carmelo Anthony and future first-round picks to the Cavaliers for the guard.
But the Knicks, having tarnished their relationship with Anthony, have nothing to lose, and assets to gain in a trade. Buddy Hield should intrigue GM Koby Altman. To be clear, Irving has no control over where (or if) he is traded. James wasn't even aware of Irving's feelings and he was disappointed when he heard about it.
Irving, who hit the game-winning 3-pointer in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals against Golden State, considered asking for a trade after that season but decided against it, ESPN.com reported. That being said, they need to prove that they are not the standard in the Eastern Conference, and that James will have to try something new to get back to his unprecedented dominance. As LeBron James' running mate for the last few seasons, Irving strived to be a co-star to James' heroics.
Irving will be a free agent in 2019, so teams should tread lightly.
"He's freaking awesome", Irving said. There's obviously more to the story than we all know, and there will likely be more coming out in the upcoming days. "And understanding how things work, not only just in the game but off the court, things that matter, just taking care of your body, understanding the magnitude of what the goal is at hand and what steps it takes in order to achieve that goal".
