The scandal has now entangled his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, who on Tuesday released emails showing he embraced Russia's efforts to support his father's presidential campaign, and admitting he would "love" to get dirt from Moscow on Clinton.
Later in the evening, President Macron and French First Lady will host a private dinner for Trump and Melania.
Macron delivered a live statement that night - in English - decrying the decision and inviting "engineers, entrepreneurs, responsible citizens who were disappointed by the decision of the president of the United States" to move to his country. Rather than isolate Trump, Macron hopes to keep the U.S. leader within the fold of other western democracies.
Trump and Macron appear to have little in common, with different views on everything from globalization to immigration.
But while both men exude alpha-male tendencies, their differences are readily apparent.
Some critics condemned Macron's choice to welcome Trump to Paris.

Macron is eager to develop close security ties with Trump, but in other areas he's already emerged as a vocal critic, most notably over Trump's withdrawal from the climate accord that bears the French capital's name. The comment has led to charges the president blames Africa's poverty on its women, while ignoring the effects of France's colonization of much of the continent.
Trump, 71 and the oldest man to enter the office of USA president, and Macron, 39, the youngest French president, have more in common than one might think, Rosenberg says.
Trump is likely to repay Macron's hospitality with a firm restatement of the alliance, and the importance of France's global role, always an important consideration in French politics.
He will also be the guest of honour at Friday's Bastille Day events, a celebration of French national pride.
According to the Elysee Palace, American troops will participate in the parade alongside their French counterparts.
Philippe said France would aim to provide asylum seekers with extra accommodation over the next two years, and would look to cut down asylum processing times to about six months on average.
Protesters are expected to demonstrate against Trump, though it is unclear to what extent.
During the USA election campaign, Trump declared that a wave of militant attacks showed "France is no longer France", urging the French to get tough on immigration and jihadists. Trump has insulted the city on a handful of occasions, often referring to his friend Jim who apparently no longer travels to the City of Lights after years of vacationing there.
