The Congressional Baseball Game began shortly after it's scheduled start of 7:05 p.m. (2305 UTC) Thursday.

Investigators say he shot House Rep. Steve Scalise before he was killed by police who had been guarding the congressman.

"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", Trump said.

Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition following surgery to fix injuries sustained after he was shot at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday, hospital officials announced in a statement on Thursday evening.

A rifle bullet hit his left hip, shattering bones, tearing organs, and leaving him in a critical condition.

WASHINGTON - Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise was upgraded from "critical" to "serious condition" Saturday and continued to show signs of improvement after he was wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice outside Washington.

Daily Caller's Kaitlan Collins reported that "Scalise has received multiple units of blood transfusion". He remains sedated but has been able to respond to his family. Press secretary Sean Spicer said "there is not enough time to follow Secret Service protocols" to ensure Trump's safety, but the president visited Scalise in the hospital on Wednesday.

Sava said Scalise would need to undergo an additional operation within the next 48 hours and more beyond that.

The game at Nationals Park, Washington DC, carried on a century-old bipartisan ritual, this one tinged with worry about Louisiana Republican Mr Scalise, 51, and the determination to answer the attack by coming together in sport.

"Our family asks that you continue to pray for Steve, Matt Mika, Zach Barth, and all of those hurt in this attack, and keep them in your thoughts as they face recovery". He said it is now hard to predict how long Scalise will need to remain in the hospital but they should have a better idea of that in the coming days.

"By playing tonight you are showing the world that we will not be immidatefd by threats, acts of violence, or assaults on our democracy", Trump said in a statement. But at a news conference, Pelosi bristled at comments made by a few Republicans and conservative activists who blamed heated Democratic rhetoric for the incident. Over social media he had lashed out at Trump and the GOP. He declined to describe specific internal injuries. Many are tributes and prayers for Congressman Steve Scalise.

On Thursday night Scalise was honored at the annual congressional baseball game at Nationals Stadium, where a record crowd showed up.
